 Eating Disorder Therapy

What are eating disorders?

Eating disorders are dangerous illnesses that cause people to adapt unhealthy behaviors related to food such as binging, excessive dieting or exercise, or purging. Unlike body image issues (see below), an eating disorder has developed to the point where it clinically impairs one’s quality of life and meets the criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) under Feeding and Eating Disorders.

What causes eating disorders?

No one would choose to develop an eating disorder. Eating disorders emerge as coping skills that initially help us manage another difficult situation in life. If you struggle with an eating disorder, it is not your fault; you were simply trying to cope as best you could. You may have at one time felt that you needed your disorder, but if you’re seeking counseling, chances are you have decided it no longer serves you. Counseling with an eating disorder specialist can help you understand the actual function the disorder serves (or served) and help you develop replacement coping skills so that you no longer need an eating disorder. This requires time and dedication on your part to practicing the tools learned in therapy to truly effect a change in your eating disorder.

What are body image issues?

Many people experience body image issues in the form of dissatisfaction with their body shape, size, weight, or some aspect of their appearance. Body image issues can contribute to the rise of an eating disorder but do not in themselves constitute a diagnosable disorder. In short, body image issues involve feeling dissatisfied but not necessarily carrying out disordered behaviors. Our society is so preoccupied with thinness and fitness that we all receive messages about how our bodies “should” look. Therefore, if you experience body image concerns, you may benefit from talk therapy that challenges typical body standards and affirms diverse bodies. I am passionate about helping clients learn how to show compassion to their bodies as they are right now. That may sound outside the realm of possibility for you, but don’t worry. With some practice and focused attention, anyone can treat their body with the respect it deserves.
